Ghana signs $700m guarantee for Sankofa, Gye Nyame Oil project

The Government of Ghana has signed an agreement of 700 million dollars with the World Bank to provide financial guarantee for the Sankofa Gye Nyame Oil and Gas Project located 60km offshore Takoradi in the Western region.

The World Bank has already negotiated the legal documentation with the project sponsors– ENI, Vitol, GNPC, and the Government of Ghana.

Two international banks, HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank are expected to jointly provide 500 million dollars Letter of Credit in the context of the World Bank’s Payment Guarantee.

23 people line up for Ghana’s presidency

Twenty-three persons aspiring to become president of Ghana have picked up nomination forms to contest in this year’s December 7 presidential elections, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Ms. Charlote Osei, has announced.

The figure is made up of 16 political party presidential aspirants and seven independent aspirants.

They are to return the fully filled forms with a filing fee of GHC50,000 by September 29,2016.

Tulsa shooting: Manslaughter charge for police officer who shot black man

A police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black motorist in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been charged with manslaughter, a prosecutor has said.

Officer Betty Shelby shot and killed Terence Crutcher last week while he was standing next to his broken-down car.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, a curfew went into effect to prevent a third night of violence after a black man was shot dead by a black police officer.

The governing NDC says there is nothing phenomenal about the New Patriotic Party (NPP) economic record because it was shielded from economic difficulties through its decision to go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

MiDA debunks “halt ECG privatization” report

The Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) has debunked media reports suggesting that the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah has halted the ECG private sector participation process.

According to the authority, the publication is untrue since MiDA has not received any such directive from the office of the Chief of Staff.

“MiDA wishes to state categorically that these comments are untrue and inaccurate,” a statement copied to Citi Business News indicated.

Mahama touts Ghana’s successes at UN General Assembly

President John Dramani Mahama took to the world stage – the 71st United Nations General Assembly – to tout Ghana’s democratic and economic strides and told his peers: “I am proud of my country.”

Serena Williams' coach targets 30 grand slams despite 'very bad season'

(CNN)Despite her 35th birthday fast approaching and niggling injuries possibly shelving what's left of her 2016 season, Serena Williams still retains grand career ambitions, according to her longtime coach.

Remarkably, the American tennis star has been set a target of 30 career singles grand slams.

"I know people are going to be very much focused on the 23rd (grand slam), I'm more focused on the 30th," Patrick Mouratoglou, who has been coaching Williams since 2012, told CNN at the unveiling of his new tennis academy on the French Riviera.

NCCE intensifies voter education programme

National Peace Council condemns acts of provocation

Accra, Sept. 20, GNA - The National Peace Council (NPC) has condemned the recent acts of provocation, especially the mock burial of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flag bearer, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo, saying it undermines cultural sensitivities.

CPP marks 107 birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah

Ghana secures $1.8 bn for 2016/2017 cocoa purchases

Ghana has signed a 1.8 billion dollars loan facility for the purchase of cocoa beans for the 2016/2017 crop year.

The facility comes with an all-inclusive rate of 1.468 percent.

The agreement was reached at a ceremony between Ghana and representatives from 24 syndicated banks in Frankfurt, Germany Wednesday, September 21, 2016.

Locally owned bank, Fidelity Bank is also part of the agreement. Under the agreement, Ghana is entitled to an extra 200 million dollars from the syndicated banks if the cocoa crop performs better and requires further funds.

Ghana earned over $3bn from petroleum revenue between 2011 and 2015

Ghana earned $3.208 billion from petroleum revenue for the production of 161.7 million barrels of crude oil between 2011 and 2015.
Although the highest number of barrels, 37.4 million, was recorded in 2015, Ghana received the lowest revenue of $396,171,909 in that year as a result of the fall in the international market price.

In 2015, oil prices fell by as much as 35 per cent on the international market.

In Ghana, calls to tear down a statue of ‘racist’ Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi has long been admired around the globe for the role he played in India's independence movement. But this month in Ghana — a West African nation that also was once a colonial subject — a group of academics have called to pull down a statue of Gandhi that was recently installed on the grounds of the country's premier university.

Their argument? The academics say that Gandhi, a leader best known for his promotion of nonviolent tactics and anti-colonialism, held shockingly racist views about Africans.

‘Economy is not broke’ – Terkper insists

Despite an unwavering rise in public debt and government’s difficulty to meet key statutory financial obligations, the Finance Minister has dispelled a widely held view that the economy is broke.

Seth Terkper insists government’s tax revenue mobilization is progressing, suggesting that government's borrowing spree is temporary.

We didn’t invite Rawlings to manifesto launch – Ametor Quarmyne

A communications team member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed the party did not invite its founder, Jerry John Rawlings to its manifesto launch at Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo region.

Ametor Quarmyne explained that, the leadership left ex-president out of the very important occasion on the party’s calendar because “we didn’t want to bother him”.

His comment comes after Mr. Rawlings on Saturday failed to attend the launching of the party’s manifesto for the December 7, elections.
