ECG concession will protect workers for 5 years- MiDA

The Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) has insisted that the concession of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) under the Power Compact II will not lead to a retrenchment exercise.

According to MiDA, the agreement has a clause that bars the concessionaire from undertaking a retrenchment exercise in the next five years.

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) has kicked against the concession, stating that ECG workers will be laid off once the process is completed.

EU confident Ghana election will go well

The European Union (EU) ambassador in Ghana, William Hanna, has said the EU will be looking up to Ghana to build on its democratic track record in the December polls.

In an interview with Class News’ Ridwan Karim Dini Osman, he charged stakeholders to encourage healthy debate in the build-up to the elections.

“Last year, we saw a lot of elections that went well in West Africa. We expect the elections to also go well in Ghana. Ghana has an already good record…” he stated.

Ghana must fight corruption in order to progress -Batidam

Governance and Corruption Adviser to the President Daniel Batidam has suggested to Ghanaians to fight corruption if they want the country to move progressively.

This, he suggested to politicians to stop the blame game in fighting the menace in society, saying the argument has not chased corruption away.

Mr. Batidam intimated that corruption remains a challenge and that the citizenry must see measures put in place by the government in curbing it.

Petrotrin looks to Ghana for oil BOST

Three weeks before Prime Minister (PM) Dr Keith Rowley announced that Trinidad and Tobago (TT) has to “find new ways to diversify (and) expand our earning potential”, the State-owned Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (Petrotrin) held talks with a Ghanaian company about doing exactly that.

Africa is still rising - IMF

Accra, Sept. 13, GNA - The International Monetary Fund (IMF), says Sub-Saharan Africa has bright prospects for growth in spite of persistent slowdown in growth owing to the slump in commodity prices and a more difficult global environment.

While there have been quite significant slowdown in some countries in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in resource-intensive countries, including Ghana, non-resource-intensive countries like Kenya, Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire have been able to maintain growth.

Team Commey to protest verdict of last Friday’s bout

Accra, Sept 13, GNA – The management of Richard Commey, is set to lodge a protest with the International Boxing Federation (IBF) over the split decision that ensured Commey’s defeat to Robert Easter Jr, in the IBF Lightweight World title fight last Friday.

Lawrence Carl Lokko, coach of Commey, told the GNA Sports that, the result was not a true reflection of the fight and they have been pondering over it and will file a protest with the IBF to seek redress.

Ghana and Ivory Coast unite against child labour in cocoa production

Two of the world’s leaders in cocoa production, Ghana and the Ivory Coast have signed an agreement to fight against child labour in cocoa production.

The agreement committing the two countries was signed by the first ladies of the two countries, Lordina Mahama of Ghana and Dominique Ouattara of the Ivory Coast in Abidjan on Tuesday.

Mahama to create 5 more administrative regions of Ghana

Paul Pogba celebrates Muslim festival with former Manchester United and Juventus team mate Patrice Evra

Paul Pogba has taken time out of his Premier League weekend preparations to celebrate the Muslim holiday, Eid Al-Adha.

Russian hackers leak Simone Biles and Serena Williams files

The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) has condemned Russian hackers for leaking confidential medical files of star US Olympic athletes.

Athletes affected include tennis players Venus and Serena Williams and teenage gymnast Simone Biles.

A group calling itself "Fancy Bears" claimed responsibility for the hack of a Wada database.

After the leak, Ms Biles said she had long been taking medicine for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

The hacker group had accused her of taking an "illicit psycho-stimulant", but she said she had "always followed the rules".

Colin Powell Calls Trump ‘a National Disgrace’ in Leaked Emails

Edward Snowden seeks pardon from Barack Obama, arguing leaks were 'vital' and 'moral'

Edward Snowden, the former intelligence contractor who leaked thousands of highly classified documents which revealed the scale of US and British surveillance, has made an 11th hour pitch to Barack Obama to grant him a presidential pardon before leaving office.

Snowden, whose disclosures included the revelation that the US National Security Agency was collecting "metadata" on Americans' phone calls, is living in exile in Moscow, and would face up to 30 years in prison for alleged violations of the Espionage Act if he returned to the US.

EC to consider review of ‘exorbitant’ filing fees

The Electoral Commission (EC) has said it will soon meet to consider whether or not to review amounts it announced for filing fees for both presidential and parliamentary candidates for December’s elections.

This follows the wave of bashing it received from some political parties for pegging presidential and parliamentary filing fees at GHc50, 000 and GHc10, 000 respectively; an amount they complain is too high.

Two Media Firms Shut Down For Inciting Violence In Donkorkrom

Two information centers in the Kwahu Afram Plains North District have been directed to suspend operations for one month after it emerged that they incited violence last month in the district capital.

The August 18 violence led to the ransacking of the Donkorkrom Police Station by irate residents over alleged complicity in crime by an officer.

After a District Security Council (DISEC) meeting on Thursday, September 1, Nhyiraba and Asalam information centers were cited as being used as media to spark the violence.

Bawumia missed ‘simple primary school’ economics – Veep

The Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has rebuked the New Patriotic Party’s running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for criticizing government expenditure.

Bawumia at a lecture last Thursday among other things accused government of spending more money to refinance debts than it spent on productive assets.

He also said not only is Ghana spending more on interest payments than on infrastructure, but is also spending more on interest payments than the value of key agricultural production like Cocoa, livestock, fishing, forestry and logging – put together.
