French Open 2019: Djokovic beaten by Thiem in semi-final

World number one Novak Djokovic's bid to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time was ended by Dominic Thiem in the French Open semi-final.

Thiem beat the 32-year-old 6-2 3-6 7-5 5-7 7-5 in the semi-final, which began on Friday but was interrupted by bad weather three times.

The fourth seed will face 11-time champion Rafael Nadal on Sunday, a repeat of last year's final.

Thiem, 25, is the first Austrian player to reach a second Grand Slam final......

Caf President Ahmad Ahmad allegedly arrested in France

The Caf leader was reportedly taken in on Thursday morning at a hotel in France where he was staying for the Fifa congress
Caf President Ahmad Ahmad has allegedly been arrested by French police at the Berri Hotel in Paris.

The Caf boss was in the European nation to attend the Fifa congress, which brought about Gianni Infantino’s re-election as President of the governing body.

According to Jeune Afrique, Ahmad Ahmad was detained at 8:30am local time and will face the anti-corruption agency's Central Office for Combating Corruption and Financial and Tax Crimes (Oclif).

Ayew is Black Stars captain

André Ayew, Ghana’s Captain

Black Stars coach, Kwasi Appiah, has named André Ayew as the permanent captain of Ghana’s senior national football team ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

This followed a meeting with the top brass of the Normalisation Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after which approval and full backing were given to Appiah’s plans.

Ayew replaces Asamoah Gyan as captain of the Black Stars.

Gyan, who has captained the Black Stars for a record seven years, has been elevated to the position of General Captain.

2019 AFCON qualifier: Ayew scores a brace as Ghana beat Ethiopia

Jordan Ayew scored a brace on Sunday, 18 November 2018 to give the Black Stars of Ghana a 2-0 win over Ethiopia in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Ayew hit the back of the net just three minutes on the clock courtesy an assist from defender Harrison Afful.

Ayew got his brace from a well taken penalty kick after Emmanuel Boateng was fouled in the box by Ethiopian goalkeeper.

The Ethiopians came into the second half stronger, winning the lion share of possession but the Ghanaian defenders kept them at bay.

Deputy Sports Minister, Acting NSA DG suspended over visa scandal

The president has suspended from office the Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports as well as the Acting Director General of the National Sports Authority.

The suspension which takes immediate effect is in reaction to the visa scandal which has rocked the country in the wake of the Commonwealth games currently underway in Australia.

The uncle of Captain Maxwell Mahama, young military officer lynched by Denkyira-Obuasi residents on Monday said, the family wants justice to bring a closure to his gruesome killing.

Prof. Fred Mark Bagonluri says it is unfortunate a man who has sworn to defend his country had to die in such a manner.

“A man who decides to save his nation has to die in war, and not murdered by the very citizens that he swore an oath to protect and defend against both internal and external aggression.

“For him to die in this manner challenges my citizenship,” he said.

Former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe was named Sports Personality of the Year on Saturday by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana at their 42nd Awards Night.

The General Secretary of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana was awarded for his role in international football administration and his contribution to the development of football in Ghana, particularly at the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG).

Christian Atsu is one of several high-profile players omitted by Kwesi Appiah

Christian Atsu has been left out of the 30-man Ghana squad for next month's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia.

The 25-year-old forward is one of several high-profile players omitted by Kwesi Appiah in his first squad since his second coming as Black Stars coach.

Atsu, who signed for newly-promoted English Premier League side Newcastle United this week, is joined on the sidelines by Mubarak Wakaso, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu and Razak Brimah.

Guinea join Ghana in U-17 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals

Guinea joined Ghana in the semi-finals of the Under 17 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon after a 0-0 draw between both sides in their final match of Group A in Libreville.

The point was enough for Guinea to finish as group runners-up and secure a place at the World Cup in India in October.

In the other Group A game, Cameroon beat hosts Gabon 1-0 in Port Gentil courtesy of a goal from Stephane Thierry Zobo.

The result was not enough for Cameroon to progress, ending the tournament in third place in the standings, ahead of Gabon who had already been eliminated.
