Ghana Bar Association expresses surprise over release of Delta 8

The Ghana Bar Association says it was shocked by the release of some eight members of pro-NPP vigilante group, Delta Force, who were being tried for attacking a court.

GBA Vice President, Tony Forson told Joy News Wednesday, the Association has decided to study the judge’s ruling to understand what led to the decision.

He said GBA is still committed to its earlier statement that the eight men should be prosecuted for disrupting justice.

China describes Ghana as an important development partner

Accra, May 17, GNA - Ghana has been described as an important development partner of China on the African continent.
“Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ghana and China 57 years ago, the two countries have enjoyed fruitful cooperation in the economic and trade fields, bringing tangible benefits to people of the two countries.”

Sun Baohung, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, said this at the opening ceremony of the China Trade week in Accra on Wednesday.

Tullow to drill more oil wells after Ghana-Ivory Coast maritime dispute

Tullow Oil says plans are underway to resume drilling next year to boost output at its Tweneboa, Enyenra, Ntomme (TEN) field once the maritime dispute between Ghana and The Cote d’Ivoire is resolved.

Mr Charles Darku, the Tullow Ghana Managing Director, told shareholders on Wednesday that the drilling of the new wells would help increase production to 80,000 barrels a day from the current expected level of 50,000 barrels for 2017.

Ghana to export power by 2020 – Energy Minister

Ghana may export power to neighbouring countries by 2020 if current reforms in the energy sector are completed, Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko has said.

The Minister said the country could be generating in excess energy capacity of 1,700 megawatts because of the many power plants being installed.

Speaking on the final day of the National Policy Summit 2017 at the Accra International Conference Centre Tuesday, the Minister said the excess power will be exported for the money to be invested in other sectors of the economy.

National digital address system will be ready by July – Bawumia

Alan Kyerematen: We’ll establish ten industrial parks across Ghana

Government has revealed plans to anchor industrialization in the country on the establishment of ten new industrial parks.

According to Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, each of the ten regions would have one park with the requisite facilities and flexible land schemes to facilitate the setting up of industries.

This initiative which draws heavily on similar models from Asia, is expected to create thousands of jobs for Ghanaians.

‘We remain Ghana’s largest development partner’ – EU Ambassador

The European Union has said it remains committed to the economic development of Ghana.

EU Ambassador to Ghana, William Hanna said the Union will continue its development cooperation with the new government focusing on sustainable development.

At the Europe Day reception in Accra last Tuesday, Mr Hanna said the EU’s bilateral and development programmes will be coordinated to promote prosperity among Ghanaians.

“This year, more and more, we are hearing the phrase ‘Ghana beyond Aid’ [and] I am encouraged by this concept,” he said.

Government will take measures to protect local businesses from foreign competitors, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta has said.

In response to concerns raised by the President of the Association of Ghana Industries , James Asare Adjei on competition from foreign investors at the maiden National Policy Summit, the Minister said there should be no apologies over government’s desire to see local companies flourish at the expense of foreign ones.

According to them, the waivers will help them establish new businesses in the country as well as expand already existing ones.

Anthony Joshua could face Wladimir Klitschko in Cardiff in October

A rematch between unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko could take place at Cardiff's Principality Stadium in October.

Briton Joshua stopped Klitschko at Wembley last month to add the WBA world heavyweight title to his IBF crown.

Wales' rugby union team will play at the Principality Stadium for most Saturdays in November and December, but 28 October could be a potential date.

"Talks are ongoing over venues," said Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn.

Inflation rate for April inches up to 13 per cent

Accra, May 10, GNA - The year-on-year inflation rate went up slightly in April to 13.0 per cent, up by 0.2 percentage points, compared with the 12.8 per cent recorded in March.

The Acting Government Statistician, Mr Baah Wadieh told a press conference on Wednesday that the monthly change rate in April 2017 was 1.6 per cent, while that for March 2017 stood at 1.3 per cent.

The year-on-year non-food inflation rate recorded for April was 16.3 per cent compared with the 15.6 per cent recorded in March 2017.

CHINESE AMBASSADOR CALLS ON INFORMATION MINISTER

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Sun Baohong, has assured the Government of Ghana of that country’s commitment to the strengthening of bilateral relations between Ghana and China.

Her Excellency Ms Baohong noted that Ghana was the second sub-Saharan Africa to establish diplomatic relations with China, the first to receive China and that 5,000 Ghanaian students were, currently, studying in China.

She was speaking during a courtesy call on the Minister for Information, Mr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid in Accra.

Gov’t releases feeding grant for SHSs

The government has released an amount of over one hundred million Ghana Cedis for the payment of feeding grants for second cycle institutions.

The amount covers feeding arrears for about two out of the four outstanding terms.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Finance, the government is processing the claims for the other outstanding arrears for the two terms in question.

The non-payment of the arrears has affected the re-opening of most senior high schools especially in the three regions of the North.

Govt fights punitive cost of remitting money

The Ministry of Finance is hopeful that a US$2.6 million Remittance Grant Facility (RGF) secured from the Switzerland government will help bring down the cost of remitting money to the country from the current 12 per cent of every US$200 remitted to five per cent.

The reduction is needed to motivate more Ghanaian residents abroad to use the formal means in sending money back to their families and loved ones.

Over 70 SHS in northern Ghana postpone reopening

Senior High Schools in the three northern regions have delayed reopening indefinitely, JoyNews has learnt.

The three regions together have a total of 72 Senior High Schools that are managed by the Ghana Education Service.

The Heads say government’s failure to reimburse the outstanding feeding grants for four academic calendars, necessitated the action because they were hugely indebted to their suppliers.

World Bank confirms discussions to extend Ghana’s IMF programme

World Bank Country Director Henry Kerali has confirmed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is in discussions with Ghana over extension of the Fund program.

This confirms earlier reports by JOYBUSINESS that government is likely to extend the fund program which should have ended in April 2018.

The move JOYBUSINESS understands has been influenced by IMF’s concerns that Ghana may not be able to implement the critical reforms before the original completion date of April 2018.

Ghana to borrow $1.3bn for 2017/2018 cocoa purchases

Government has defended its decision to reduce the syndicated loan for cocoa beans purchases for the 2017/2018 crop season, by about 28 percent.

The country will be seeking 1.3 billion dollars from its lenders for cocoa purchases for the next crop season which starts in October 2017.

This amount is lower compared to the 1.8 billion dollars the country secured last year.

Deputy Agric Minister, William Kwaitoo explains to Citi Business News the move is to avert high losses associated with the declining global prices of cocoa.

Explosion at Takoradi leaves more than 100 injured (video & photos)

A total of about 100 people were said to have been injured after a gas explosion at a company in Sekondi-Takoradi Tuesday morning.

Ghumco, a utensils manufacturing company was said to be receiving liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from a tanker when the explosion occurred.

The tanker split into two, flipped over and landed in a wetland close by.

Ghana, Cote D'Ivoire to sign 'agreement for strategic partnership'

President Nana Akufo-Addo has revealed that close co-operation between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire will be facilitated by a new initiative dubbed “An Agreement For a Strategic Partnership”, that will be signed by the two countries.

This agreement, according to President Akufo-Addo, will bind Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire “in even closer intimacy and go beyond the bounds of the concept of the Permanent Joint Commission, which is the conventional tool for co-operation.”
