A total of about 100 people were said to have been injured after a gas explosion at a company in Sekondi-Takoradi Tuesday morning.
Ghumco, a utensils manufacturing company was said to be receiving liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from a tanker when the explosion occurred.
The tanker split into two, flipped over and landed in a wetland close by.
According to Graphic Online’s Takoradi reporters, Akwasi Ampratwum Mensah and Koblah Dotsey Aklorbortu, fire from the explosion destroyed items at the Chinese-owned Ghumco Company and extended to the nearby OLAM Ghana warehouse, completely destroying everything on site including; rice, oil and flour.
The first five firemen early responders were caught up in the blaze and have been sent to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for treatment.
One of the firemen is said to be in a critical condition and efforts are underway to transfer him to the 37 Military hospital in Accra for further medical attention.
A number of other people said to have sustained burns have also been sent to the same hospital.
The Effia Nkwanta Hospital has been inundated with injured person.
Vehicular traffic on the main Sekondi-Takoradi highway was diverted to the Effiakuma and Effia road.
Firemen battled the blaze to bring it under control.
