Election 2020: Mahama not marketable to voters - Dzirasah

A former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Ken Dzirasah says it will be difficult for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to market former President John Mahama to voters in his bid to be re-elected President in 2020.

According to him, the difficulty in marketing Mahama stems from the NDC losing the 2016 elections which has informed his (Dzirasah's) decision to back Professor Joshua Alabi for the contest.

Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire to secure $1.2bn loan for agenda to attract youth to cocoa industry

The governments of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire are close to securing a $1.2 billion loan from the African Development Bank to undertake programmes and interventions that will make the cocoa industry attractive to the youth.

Six million dollars of the amount will go into the rehabilitation of the industry while the rest will be used to promote value addition to domestic processing of cocoa beans.

This year's ban on fishing postponed to 2019

The Cabinet has decided to postpone the onemonth ban on fishing activities in the country, scheduled to start on August 7, 2018 to next year.

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Ms Elizabeth Naa Afoley Quaye, made this known at a meeting with stakeholders in the fisheries industry in Accra yesterday.. . .

Pope Francis declares death penalty inadmissible in all cases

Pope Francis has changed the teachings of the Catholic faith to officially oppose the death penalty in all circumstances, the Vatican has said.

The Catechism of the Church, a codified doctrine which sums up teachings, had previously stated that the death penalty could be used in some cases.

It now says it is "inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person".

Pope Francis has spoken out against executions in the past.

President swear-in new EC Chairperson, deputies

Accra, Aug. 2, GNA - President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday swore-into office the new Commissioner for the Electoral Commission, Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensah.
He also inducted into office, her two deputies, Mr Samuel Tetteh, and Dr Eric Bossman Asare, as well as Ms Adwoa Asuma Abrefi, as a member of the Commission.

Broaden consultation on critical matters - Prof Kwesi Botchwey

The Founder and Executive Chairman of the African Development Policy Initiative (ADPOI), Professor Kwesi Botchwey, has called on the government to broaden the process of consultation over critical matters that affect the public good.

He said there was a need for the government to make the right decisions rather than hasty and expedient ones by creating an atmosphere of inclusiveness, respect and courtesy in national discourse and debates and be tolerant of other people’s views rather than angrily dismissing them.

Nine women file to contest NDC elections in Central Region

Efforts at encouraging strong women representation in active politics received a major boost as nine women filed their forms to contest various positions in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Region.

Seven out of the number were candidates contesting the election for the first time, with two incumbent women seeking re-election.

In all, 62 candidates had put themselves up for the party's internal polls as of the close of filing on Tuesday, July 24, 2018.

Suspend renegotiated AMERI, Karpower deals — Minority

The Minority in Parliament has called on the government to, as a matter of national interest, suspend the renegotiated Ameri Power and Karpower deals, saying they are riddled with scandalous content and are a rip-off.

Presenting the position of the Minority on the deals at a press conference in Accra yesterday, Mr John Jinapor, the Member of Parliament for Yapei/Kusawgu and former Deputy Power Minister, said the government should rather make the details available for broader public scrutiny before going ahead with the deals.

Consolidated Bank Ltd takes over assets of 5 collapsed banks

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has revoked the licences of five banks and subsequently merged them into a new bank — the Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited — to be headed by Mr Nii Amanor Dodoo of KPMG.

The entities — the uniBank, the Royal Bank, the Sovereign Bank, the Construction Bank and the BEIGE Bank — were found to have committed various regulatory and financial breaches that made them insolvent and unfit to continue operations.

Govt, banking consultant back BoG move

Moments after the announcement of the revocation of the licences and subsequent merger of the five local banks by the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Banking Consultant, Nana Otuo Acheampong, backs the move by the central bank, saying it will bring certainty in the ongoing recaptalisation drive.

“This is good news because this move will protect depositors’ funds and strengthen the banking sector and make it more solid,” he stated.

EOCO indicts Ernest Thompson, four others in SSNIT software scandal

Four people, including the former Director General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Mr Ernest Thompson have been indicted by the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) for causing financial loss to the state.

The others are Mrs Juliet Hasana Krama, CEO of Perfect Business System (PBS), John Hagan Mensah, former OBS Project Manager at SSNIT and Caleb Afaglo who was General Manager of Management Information Systems (MIS) at SSNIT.

Defunct Capital Bank founder Ato Essien released after detention

The Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) has granted bail to Mr William Ato Essien, the founder of collapsed bank, Capital Bank after detaining him overnight.
EOCO invited Mr Essien on Tuesday April 17 to assist with ongoing investigations into circumstances leading to the collapse of the bank in August last year.

Its Executive Director, Mr K. K. Amoah, told Graphic Online Wednesday that the detention was “part of the investigation process.”

AGI presses for access to funding, further reduction of utilities

WASSCE candidate, 4 others arrested over murder of aeronautic engineer

A teenager sitting for ongoing West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSSCE), has been arrested together with four others on suspicion of murdering an aeronautic engineer, at Akroso near Oda.

The suspects are Samson Anim, driver of the Hyundai bus the victim boarded before he died, Ebenezer Asante, Samuel Peprah, Frank Konadu and Emmanuel Okyere, the 18-year-old who is writing the WASSSCE.

Okyere has, however, been granted police inquiry bail on "compassionate grounds" to enable him to continue with the examinations.

Minority chastises government over corruption

Accra, Feb. 22, GNA - The Minority NDC in Parliament has slammed the Akufo-Addo-led government for the lack of commitment to fight corruption in the country.

According to them, the latest Corruption Perception Index released by the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) vindicates the NDC’s position that there is corruption in the NPP’s government.

Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, Ranking Member on Communication, speaking to the media in Parliament, said the NPP administration was doing nothing to fight corruption in the country.
