Ghana Police Service identifies over 5000 flashpoints ahead of 2016 elections

The Ghana Police Service says it has identified over five thousand potential flash point in the forthcoming elections which must be managed to prevent any form of violence.

The Director General of the Police Criminal Investigations Department, Proper Kwame Ablorh made the observation on behalf of the Inspector General at a national Colloquium on peaceful elections organized by the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre (KAIPTC).

Ayew is Black Stars captain

Black Stars coach, Kwasi Appiah, has named André Ayew as the permanent captain of Ghana’s senior national football team ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

This followed a meeting with the top brass of the Normalisation Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after which approval and full backing were given to Appiah’s plans.

Ayew replaces Asamoah Gyan as captain of the Black Stars.

Gyan, who has captained the Black Stars for a record seven years, has been elevated to the position of General Captain.

Fuel prices to remain unchanged – COPEC-GH

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers-Ghana (COPEC-GH), has predicted that fuel prices will remain stable at the pumps in the second pricing window of December 2018 despite a dip in world market prices by between 6% and 9%.

We need a "strong party" for 2020 – Koku

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) needs a strong horse to enable it to win the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections, defeated General Secretary aspirant of the NDC, Koku Anyidoho, has said.

2019 AFCON qualifier: Ayew scores a brace as Ghana beat Ethiopia

Jordan Ayew scored a brace on Sunday, 18 November 2018 to give the Black Stars of Ghana a 2-0 win over Ethiopia in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Ayew hit the back of the net just three minutes on the clock courtesy an assist from defender Harrison Afful.

Ayew got his brace from a well taken penalty kick after Emmanuel Boateng was fouled in the box by Ethiopian goalkeeper.

The Ethiopians came into the second half stronger, winning the lion share of possession but the Ghanaian defenders kept them at bay.

NDC opens Wuogon nomination process

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has opened nominations for the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary primary ahead of the by-election.

The Functional Executive Committee (FEC), acting on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC), notified the constituency executives in the constituency to open the nomination process in accordance with Article 41 of the NDC’s Constitution, a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Aseidu Nketia said.

Picking of nomination forms starts from today, Monday 17 to 18 December 2018.

WC: Govt'll ensure Stars qualify – Minister

The Government of Ghana is putting in more efforts to ensure that the Black Stars of Ghana make it to the World Cup in Russia and also win the 2017 Cup of Nations in Gabon, Minister of Youth and Sports Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has said.

Ghana will play Uganda on Friday October 7 at the Tamale Sports Stadium in a bid to qualify for a fourth straight World Cup. The team will feature in the Cup of Nations in Gabon in 2017.

Emulate “incorruptible” Kwabena Adjei – Speaker

Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye has chided corrupt politicians in the country and urged them to follow the footsteps of the late Majority Leader of Parliament Dr Kwabena Adjei who was the National Chairman of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) before his death.

Dr Adjei will be buried on Saturday, 1 June 2019.

His remains were laid in state in parliament on Friday, 31 May 2019, ahead of his burial.

In a eulogy, Prof Oquaye said Dr Adjei “was honest”, adding that: “He was not corrupt”.

Petrol, diesel, LPG to fall by 5.8%, 4.8%, 2.4% – Hadzide

A fall in inflation coupled with the strengthening of the cedi and the falling of prices of fuel on the international market should spur a further reduction in the price of fuel at the pumps for consumers, Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Information Pius Enam Hadzide has said.

The prices of petrol, diesel, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) are expected to fall by 5.8%, 4.8, and 2.4%, respectively.

Inflation down to 16.7%

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has released the inflation rate for July 2016 with Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) declining to 16.7 per cent from 18.4 per cent in June 2016.

The monthly change rate was 0.9 per cent for July 2016 compared to 1.3 per cent recorded in June this year.

According to the figures released on Wednesday August 10, food inflation was 8.6 per cent in July, same as in May 2016.

Meanwhile, the inflation rate for imported items decreased to 15.2 per cent in July 2016, from 17.3 per cent recorded in June 2016.

Ghana finds potential HIV cure

The Centre of Awareness has disclosed that it has found a potential cure for HIV/AIDS following ten years of research into plant medicines in Ghana.

According to the founder of the centre, Dr Samuel Ato Duncan, the drug named COA has been scientifically tested and seen to be efficacious and safe for the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

Dr Duncan disclosed this at a presentation on the drug at the Physicians and Surgeons auditorium in Accra on Wednesday, 5 October 2016.

#2019Budget: Akufo-Addo gov't overborrowing – Terkper

Former Finance Minister, Seth Terkper, has said even though the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while in opposition, kicked against borrowing by the Mahama administration, the Akufo-Addo government is even borrowing more than his predecessor did.

The government has promised in the 2019 budget to undertake massive infrastructure projects next year.

Mr Terkper says the government “cannot do infrastructure on a revenue base which is not forthcoming in a domestic revenue mobilisation which was promised that they will do outside existing revenue flows”.
