Ghana Police Service identifies over 5000 flashpoints ahead of 2016 elections

The Ghana Police Service says it has identified over five thousand potential flash point in the forthcoming elections which must be managed to prevent any form of violence.

The Director General of the Police Criminal Investigations Department, Proper Kwame Ablorh made the observation on behalf of the Inspector General at a national Colloquium on peaceful elections organized by the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre (KAIPTC).

NDC polls: Ampofo elected Chairman

Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has been elected as the new National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The former Local Government Minister polled 3,656 votes while his closest contender, Mr Dan Abodakpi, polled 2,199 votes. Alhaji Hudu Yahya garnered 1,823 votes, Betty Mould-Iddrisu managed 355 votes and Danny Anang, a financier of the party had, according to provisional results.

Probe Uni-Pass deal – IMANI petitions parliament

Policy think-tank IMANI has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament to institute a probe into the 10-year Uni-Pass contract signed between the Ministry of Trade and Ghana Link Network Services Limited—in collaboration with their foreign partners Customs Uni-Pass International Agency (CUPIA) of Korea Customs Services—to introduce Uni-Pass to the ports system.

The request for a Parliamentary enquiry into the Uni-Pass deal, according to IMANI, is to “prevent disruption to Ghana’s progress on trade facilitation”.

100-yr $50bn bond'll end "hand-to-mouth" status – Ofori-Atta

Klottey Korle NDC: SC clears Zanetor

Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has been cleared by the Supreme Court to hold herself out as the parliamentary nominee of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the forthcoming general elections.

The Supreme Court also directed the High Court to deliver a ruling in that regard because an individual can only be a candidate after the Electoral Commission (EC) has opened the opportunity for filing. The apex court, therefore, said since the EC was yet to take that action, the argument of Dr Rawlings not being eligible did not hold water.

Sex-for-job comment: Parliament will summon Agyapong – MP

The leadership of parliament will summon the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong over his sex-for-job allegations against the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), in due course, Deputy Majority Leader Alfred Agbesi has revealed.

“Honourable Kennedy Agyapong is a Member of Parliament, and for that matter, we are in a certain environment governed by rules and regulations. Definitely leadership is going to call him and hear his side and how he feels about what he is doing,” he disclosed.

Mahama: Education not failing

President John Dramani Mahama has refuted assertions that Ghana's education is declining under his leadership.

The flag bearer of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) said "It’s absolutely not true", adding that Ghana is becoming an educational hub in Africa.

He said the nation's education is getting better every year. He, therefore, called on the media to do their research and not be conveyor belts for people’s false statements as Ghana is performing better in the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

4 NDC aspirants submit forms today

Four flag bearer aspirants of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are expected to present their nomination forms to the party today, Monday, 17 December 2018.

The four include former President John Dramani Mahama, Professor Joshua Alabi, Sylvester Mensah and Alban Bagbin.

Mr Mahama, after the party event, will proceed to the Accra International Trade Fair Centre to address the media.

This will be his first address to journalists after losing the 2016 general elections.

The Bank of Ghana has denied social media rumours that its intended clean-up of the rural and community banks sector will cause depositors to lose their funds.

In a statement, the central bank said its attention “has been drawn to malicious messages circulating on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook that an intended ‘clean up’ of the Rural and Community Banks (RCBs) sub-sector would negatively affect depositors fund with RCBs, urging them to move their funds to other institutions”.
