EC sets July 18 for re-registration of deleted NHIS registrants

The Electoral Commission has set Monday, July 18 for the re-registration of National Health Insurance (NHIS) registrants whose names have been deleted from the register.

The Director of Electoral Services at the Commission says the exercise will last for ten days.

The EC on Tuesday announced it has deleted 56,772 names of persons who registered with the NHIS cards from the voters’ register in compliance with a Supreme Court order.

Obama lifts economic sanctions Bush imposed on Ivory Coast

President of the United States (US), Barack Obama, has lifted economic sanctions imposed on Ivory Coast in 2006 by the regime of his predecessor, George Bush.

The US president cited advancing democratic credentials of the west African nation as the reason behind terminating the national emergency declared by the US in Executive Order 13396, it was this order that led to the imposition of sanctions.

Ghana and Ivory Coast unite against child labour in cocoa production

Two of the world’s leaders in cocoa production, Ghana and the Ivory Coast have signed an agreement to fight against child labour in cocoa production.

The agreement committing the two countries was signed by the first ladies of the two countries, Lordina Mahama of Ghana and Dominique Ouattara of the Ivory Coast in Abidjan on Tuesday.

Black Stars coach not happy with preparation for Rwanda tie

Avram Grant has moaned about the Black Stars preparation for the clash against the Amavubi's

Black Stars coach, Avram Grant has stated that he is not pleased with the preparation of the Senior Male National Football Team of Ghana towards the final hurdle of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda.

The Black Stars players had to foot their airfares after the Ministry stated they were cash-strapped, so can't afford their travelling expenses for the clash.

Prez. Mahama adjudged ‘Most Inspirational African President’

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama has been adjudged the ‘Most Inspirational African President’ by the congress of all Africa Students Union.

The scales of the union also identified the former African Union Chairperson, Dr. Nkosazana Clarie Dlamini Zuma, as African Personality of the Year.

The All Africa Students Union (AASU), is an independent student body with equal membership from over 50 African countries, with its headquarters in Accra.

Ghana must fight corruption in order to progress -Batidam

Governance and Corruption Adviser to the President Daniel Batidam has suggested to Ghanaians to fight corruption if they want the country to move progressively.

This, he suggested to politicians to stop the blame game in fighting the menace in society, saying the argument has not chased corruption away.

Mr. Batidam intimated that corruption remains a challenge and that the citizenry must see measures put in place by the government in curbing it.

We eat roads – Mahama tells critics

President John Dramani Mahama has retorted his critics who downplay his social intervention projects, which they say do not bring food to the table.

The commonly criticised project has been road construction, which has incidentally been a trump card of the government.

Reacting to this criticism that ‘we don’t eat roads’, the President in an interview with Radio Savannah on Thursday in the Northern Region, pointed out to the contrary that roads are literally food that can be eaten.

Criticisms by political parties over filing fees unwarranted – CODEO

The Coalition of Domestic Elections Observers (CODEO) says the criticism by political parties over the Electoral Commission’s decision to increase the filing fees for presidential and parliamentary nominees is unwarranted.

All the parties are up in arms against the EC after it announced at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting last Thursday that parliamentary candidates will have to pay GH¢10, 000 while presidential candidates will be expected to part with GH¢50,000 to file for their nominations.

In Ghana, calls to tear down a statue of ‘racist’ Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi has long been admired around the globe for the role he played in India's independence movement. But this month in Ghana — a West African nation that also was once a colonial subject — a group of academics have called to pull down a statue of Gandhi that was recently installed on the grounds of the country's premier university.

Theresa May to tell world leaders that Britain has 'a right' to protect its borders

Britain has “the right” to control its borders, Theresa May will tell world leaders as she warns that hundreds of thousands of “economic migrants” are posing has refugees.

The Prime Minister will use a trip to the United Nations General Assembly this week to criticise the global response to “unmanaged migration”, warning that they are simply “treating the symptoms of this crisis”.

Edward Snowden seeks pardon from Barack Obama, arguing leaks were 'vital' and 'moral'

Edward Snowden, the former intelligence contractor who leaked thousands of highly classified documents which revealed the scale of US and British surveillance, has made an 11th hour pitch to Barack Obama to grant him a presidential pardon before leaving office.

Snowden, whose disclosures included the revelation that the US National Security Agency was collecting "metadata" on Americans' phone calls, is living in exile in Moscow, and would face up to 30 years in prison for alleged violations of the Espionage Act if he returned to the US.
