NDC race: Sly's Campaign Coordinator, deputy resign

Mr Atukwei Quaye, the Campaign Coordinator of Mr Sylvester Mensah, one of the flag bearer aspirants of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has resigned ahead of the party’s flag bearer contest slated for December 2018.

Similarly, Mr Quaye’s deputy, Nii John Coleman, has also resigned.

"It's non-negotiable!"; an Ewe or GaDangme must be running mate – Boakye-Djan to NDC

A prominent member of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Major Osahene Boakye-Djan (Rtd.) has backed calls for the party to reserve the running mate position for a Voltarian.

This comes after a defeated National Organiser aspirant, Anita De-soso, a Voltarian, said at the National Delegates Congress of the party over the weekend that the defeat of many Voltarian candidates who were aspiring to frontline positions meant that Ewes had been sidelined from the game.

A Senior Political Science Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Kwesi Amakye, has tipped Member of Parliament (MP) for Klottey Korle, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, as a very good candidate to partner Mr John Dramani Mahama as running mate for the 2020 presidential ticket of the main opposition National Democratic Congress should the former president win the flag bearer race.

Dr Amakye told Class91.3FM’s 12Live news programme on Monday, 19 November 2018 that Dr Zanetor “has what it takes to partner former president Mahama in 2020”.

100-yr $50bn bond'll end "hand-to-mouth" status – Ofori-Atta

The decision by the government to raise a $50 billion ultra-long-term bond over a period of 100 years “is not intended to derail our debts sustainability path, but rather to enhance it”, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has explained.

Presenting the 2019 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the government on the theme: “Putting Ghana Back to Work”, Mr Ofori-Atta said on Thursday, 15 November 2018 that the government announced its intention to issue longer-dated sovereign bonds this year as part of “our bilateral engagement with other countries”.

#2019Budget: Akufo-Addo gov't overborrowing – Terkper

Former Finance Minister, Seth Terkper, has said even though the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while in opposition, kicked against borrowing by the Mahama administration, the Akufo-Addo government is even borrowing more than his predecessor did.

The government has promised in the 2019 budget to undertake massive infrastructure projects next year.

Mr Terkper says the government “cannot do infrastructure on a revenue base which is not forthcoming in a domestic revenue mobilisation which was promised that they will do outside existing revenue flows”.

2019 AFCON qualifier: Ayew scores a brace as Ghana beat Ethiopia

Jordan Ayew scored a brace on Sunday, 18 November 2018 to give the Black Stars of Ghana a 2-0 win over Ethiopia in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Ayew hit the back of the net just three minutes on the clock courtesy an assist from defender Harrison Afful.

Ayew got his brace from a well taken penalty kick after Emmanuel Boateng was fouled in the box by Ethiopian goalkeeper.

The Ethiopians came into the second half stronger, winning the lion share of possession but the Ghanaian defenders kept them at bay.

NDC polls: Sammy Gyamfi floors Fred Agbenyo by whopping 4,000 votes

Mr Sammy Gyamfi has defeated Mr Fred Agbenyo in the National Democratic Congress’ internal polls to become the new Director of Communication of the main opposition party.

Mr Gyamfi, a lawyer and former TEIN president of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), beat the incumbent Deputy Communication Director by 4,000 votes at the party’s National Delegates Congress at the International Trade Fair Centre, Accra.

According to provisional results, Mr Gyamfi polled 6,255 votes whereas his only contender in the two-man race, Mr Agbenyo polled 2,255 votes.

NDC polls: 'Gen. Mosquito' wallops, tames Koku 'The Bull' Anyidoho

Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia has retained his position as General Secretary of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the party's National Delegates Congress held at the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre, Accra.

Known by his moniker 'General Mosquito', Mr Asiedu Nketia routed his Deputy and only contender in the two-man race, Mr Koku Anyidoho.

NDC polls: Ampofo elected Chairman

Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has been elected as the new National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The former Local Government Minister polled 3,656 votes while his closest contender, Mr Dan Abodakpi, polled 2,199 votes. Alhaji Hudu Yahya garnered 1,823 votes, Betty Mould-Iddrisu managed 355 votes and Danny Anang, a financier of the party had, according to provisional results.

Emir of Qatar lauds Akufo-Addo for ‘governing Ghana well’

The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has praised the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for his leadership over the last 22 months since he took power.

He told the president he is “governing Ghana well”, and that the fundamentals of the Ghanaian economy, coupled with the prevailing social indicators, points to a “good example” worthy of emulation by others on the continent.

The Emir of Qatar made this known when President Akufo-Addo paid a day’s reciprocal official visit to Qatar, at the invitation of the Emir.

KNUST: Otumfuo warns against dictatorship

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has stated that no group would be allowed to dictate or conduct itself in a manner, that undermines the integrity of the management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Addressing the Governing Council of the KNUST on Tuesday in Kumasi, after six new members had been sworn into office, the Asantehene said: "Yes, the university is nothing if not a hotbed of free expression and the penchant for rigorous debate must be one of the intrinsic values we inculcate in our students."

BoG must move quickly to deal with non-bank sector – Ken Thompson

The Chief Executive Officer of Dalex Finance, Ken Thompson says the Bank of Ghana (BoG) must move quickly to deal with the non-bank sector to save Ghana’s economy from collapse.

Mr Thompson said the Bank of Ghana has done a good job in cleaning the banking sector adding that without a robust financial system the economy will collapse.

ECG wants 38% increase in power tariffs

The Electricity Company of Ghana wants Parliament to approve an increase in end user tariffs of at least 37.6 percent to cover the losses it is making on electricity sales under the current tariff structure which has been in effect since April this year.

This year’s edition of the annual major review of electricity tariffs is currently ongoing, under the supervision of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission PURC, although a firm decision on the applicable tariffs for 2019 is not expected until December 9.

Minority predicts more taxes in 2019 budget

Ahead of the 2019 budget presentation in Parliament on Thursday, November 15, the Minority is predicting that the government will introduce new taxes.

These new taxes, according to the Minority Spokesperson on Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, will be the Finance Ministry's solution to bridging the gaping fiscal deficit.

KNUST re-opens Friday Nov 16 after new members joined 'old' Council

Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) will return to campus on Friday November 16, 2018 and academic work will start on Monday November 19, 2018.

This follows the swearing in of new members of the Governing Council of the university on Tuesday..

The Chancellor of the university, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has set up a five-member committee to be headed by a judge to investigate what led to the impasse.

Waiting until 2019 to construct footbridges too far – Adentan resident

A resident of Madina-Adentan is unhappy with a 2019 timeline given by the Ghana Highways Authority for the construction of bridges on the Madina-Adentan highway.

Selorm Brantie who is a member of the residents association is unimpressed with the assurance by GHA.

He said one year is too long a time and that more people would have died by that time.

According to him, the time to act is now to save lives since one life is one too many to lose.

Parliament approves Oppong Nkrumah, 5 others as ministers

Parliament has approved the nomination of Kojo Oppong Nkrumah as the Information Minister.

Brong Ahafo Regional Minister Evans Opoku Bobie, Gender Minister Cynthia Morrison, Upper East Regional Minister Paulina Abayage, and two other Deputy Ministers have also been approved by the House.

Their approval follows a successful vetting by Parliament’s Appointment Committee last week and its recommendation for all the nominees to be approved.

Aviation Minister, Kofi Ada praised the Ofoase-Ayirebi MP for his brilliant answers to questions asked during the vetting.
