Journalists must show independence of political influences

Accra, Sept. 18, GNA - Journalists have been told to abide by their moral and professional obligations by demonstrating that they are independent of government, individuals and political influences in order to maintain public confidence and trust in the profession.

Dr Wilberforce Sefakor Dzisah, Rector of Ghana Institute of Journalism, gave the advice at the 10th congregation of the Institute where 690 students graduated.

Two hundred and thirty were awarded diploma 460 with degree certificates.

Theresa May to tell world leaders that Britain has 'a right' to protect its borders

Britain has “the right” to control its borders, Theresa May will tell world leaders as she warns that hundreds of thousands of “economic migrants” are posing has refugees.

The Prime Minister will use a trip to the United Nations General Assembly this week to criticise the global response to “unmanaged migration”, warning that they are simply “treating the symptoms of this crisis”.

Mrs May will say that “all countries” have a “responsibility” to manage their borders to reduce illegal and uncontrolled migration.

The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has mocked the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) saying the party’s Acting General Secretary, John Boadu is politically weak to face-off with him during media engagements.

According to him, the NPP acting chief scribe chickens out of media banter anytime he becomes aware he’ll be battling with him (Asiedu Nketia) either on radio or Television.

President Mahama In New York

President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has left Accra for New York to attend the 71st General Assembly of the United Nations.

This year’s General Assembly Debate will open on Tuesday, with President Mahama scheduled to address the world body on Wednesday, September 21.

As Co-Chair of the UN Advocacy Group on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), President Mahama will be co-hosting a number of side events related to the successful implementation and advocacy for the SDGs.

Liberian Leader Commissions Envoys To UK, Ghana

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has commissioned Liberia’s Ambassadors to the United Kingdom and Ghana respectively in Monrovia.

According to an Executive Mansion release, those commissioned were Dr. S. Mohammed Sheriff, Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Madam Genevieve A. Kennedy, Ambassador to the Republic of Ghana.

Performing the commissioning ceremony on Friday, President Sirleaf hoped that the commissioned officials will represent the country with a high level of professionalism and allegiance to improve the image of Liberia.

The Opposition New Patriotic Party is disillusioned and missing from their Capitalist orientation, General Secretary of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketia has said.

According to him, the NPP appears to be diverting from their original ideals of a private sector-led state.

Speaking at the NDC manifesto launch in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo region, General Mosquito, as he is popularly known said the NPP cannot win the fight of providing social amenities for the larger populace against the NDC.

A former mayor of Accra and a leading member of the New Patriotic Party, Stanley Nii Adjiri-Blankson has declared the opposition presidential candidate’s reverence for the paramount chief of the Asogli Traditional area, Togbe Afede XIV.

According to him, Nana Akufo-Addo has so much confidence in Togbe Afede for his open-mindedness and development orientation, stating that, “Nana believes in transparent development just as Togbe is doing for his people. And he wants to rely on the wise counsel of such chiefs to transform this country, when he comes into power in 2017.”

Founder Rawlings conspicuously missing at NDC manifesto launch

Founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Jerry John Rawlings was conspicuously missing at the party’s 2016 manifesto launch in Sunyani on Saturday, September 17.

No reason whatsoever was given for the absence of Ghana’s longest-serving head of state at his party’s event.

His daughter, Zanetor, who is contesting the 2016 elections on the party’s ticket in the Klottey Korle Constituency, was however present.

NDC national executives optimistic of resounding victory

Sunyani, Sept. 17, GNA - The national executives of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) have given the assurance that the party would win the December 7general election with a larger margin of votes.

They predicted a landslide victory of 57 per cent as they took turn to address thousands of NDC members, supporters and sympathisers at the launching of the Party's Election 2016 Manifesto on Saturday in Sunyani.

According to them, it would take 20 years for the Party to regain power if it succumbs to defeat to the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP)
