Govt, banking consultant back BoG move

Moments after the announcement of the revocation of the licences and subsequent merger of the five local banks by the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Banking Consultant, Nana Otuo Acheampong, backs the move by the central bank, saying it will bring certainty in the ongoing recaptalisation drive.

“This is good news because this move will protect depositors’ funds and strengthen the banking sector and make it more solid,” he stated.

EOCO indicts Ernest Thompson, four others in SSNIT software scandal

Four people, including the former Director General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Mr Ernest Thompson have been indicted by the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) for causing financial loss to the state.

The others are Mrs Juliet Hasana Krama, CEO of Perfect Business System (PBS), John Hagan Mensah, former OBS Project Manager at SSNIT and Caleb Afaglo who was General Manager of Management Information Systems (MIS) at SSNIT.

Defunct Capital Bank founder Ato Essien released after detention

The Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) has granted bail to Mr William Ato Essien, the founder of collapsed bank, Capital Bank after detaining him overnight.
EOCO invited Mr Essien on Tuesday April 17 to assist with ongoing investigations into circumstances leading to the collapse of the bank in August last year.

Its Executive Director, Mr K. K. Amoah, told Graphic Online Wednesday that the detention was “part of the investigation process.”

AGI presses for access to funding, further reduction of utilities

WASSCE candidate, 4 others arrested over murder of aeronautic engineer

A teenager sitting for ongoing West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSSCE), has been arrested together with four others on suspicion of murdering an aeronautic engineer, at Akroso near Oda.

The suspects are Samson Anim, driver of the Hyundai bus the victim boarded before he died, Ebenezer Asante, Samuel Peprah, Frank Konadu and Emmanuel Okyere, the 18-year-old who is writing the WASSSCE.

Okyere has, however, been granted police inquiry bail on "compassionate grounds" to enable him to continue with the examinations.

Minority chastises government over corruption

Accra, Feb. 22, GNA - The Minority NDC in Parliament has slammed the Akufo-Addo-led government for the lack of commitment to fight corruption in the country.

According to them, the latest Corruption Perception Index released by the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) vindicates the NDC’s position that there is corruption in the NPP’s government.

Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, Ranking Member on Communication, speaking to the media in Parliament, said the NPP administration was doing nothing to fight corruption in the country.

Makola ‘Tax Clinic’ targets 200 TIN applicants by end of week

Makola small taxpayer office of the Ghana Revenue Authority, (GRA) said it is targeting 200 people to register for the Tax Identification Number (TIN) by the end of this week.

The 'Tax and Good Governance' week launched by the GRA has put the local tax offices across the country to work.

Tax clinics have been mounted at vantage points to see to the registration of Tax Identification Numbers (TIN) and also offer an opportunity to taxpayers to file their returns.

CID Calls Bluff Of NDC MPs

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has said that it has not suspended any investigations into allegation of double salaries received by some National Democratic Congress (NDC) former ministers who were also MPs.

That response followed a claim by the minority MPs that the CID boss had embarrassed them by inviting them over the issue.

Mubarak wasn’t denied Palestine entry – Israeli Amb.

The Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Ami Mehl, has denied claims that the Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, was denied a visa to enter Palestine.

The lawmaker, who was invited by the Palestinian Authority to give a speech in Ramallah, alleged that his entry permit to Palestine was cancelled at the last minute just when he was about crossing the border into Palestine.

Parliament approves $50m to complete UG Medical Centre

Parliament has approved $50 million for the completion of the remaining works at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).

According to the Minister of Health, Mr Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, although the centre looked complete from the outside, there was much more work to be done to make it fully functional.

Addressing a news conference to commemorate this year’s World Health Day in Accra on Wednesday, he cited, as an example, the absence of a back-up generating set as a major obstacle to the opening of the facility.

Akufo-Addo launches 7-year devt plan

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday launched the seven-year Coordinated Programme of Economic and Social Development policies of the government, saying the agenda for job creation, prosperity and equal opportunity for all was on course.
