Producer Inflation rises to 11.1 per cent in July

Accra, Sept. 29, GNA - Year on year industry inflation (PPI) for August rose to 11.1 per cent, representing an increase of 0.7 percentage point over the 10.4 per cent recorded in July.

That is, ex-factory prices of goods and services for all industry increased on average by 11.1 percent in August 2016 relative to the price level recorded in August 2015.

Month-on-month inflation change in producer price index between July and August stood at -3.3 per cent.

CAF elects Guinea and Ghana officials to FIFA Council

CAIRO -- African football leaders have elected officials from Guinea and Ghana to fill two new seats on the FIFA Council.

The Confederation of African Football says Almamy Kabele Camara and Kwesi Nyantakyi earned enough votes in a four-candidate contest on Thursday.

They will complete a seven-member African delegation at an Oct. 13-14 meeting of the expanded FIFA Council, chaired by president Gianni Infantino.

The meeting in Zurich should begin talks to expand the 2026 World Cup to 40 teams and start the bidding process.

IMF approves Ghana’s third review

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) board has approved Ghana’s third review under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF). The nod was given yesterday [Wednesday].

Ghana last week provided in full data requested by the Fund to enable it meet and make a decision on the country’s ECF program.

Among the data requested by the Fund was information on the country’s energy sector.

According to the Finance Ministry, the information was necessary as the Fund considers the power sector as one of the critical factors to the progress of the bailout deal.

Malaysian flight MH17 downed by Russian-made missile: prosecutors

Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down by a missile fired from a launcher brought into Ukraine from Russia and located in a village held by pro-Russian rebels, international prosecutors said on Wednesday.

The findings counter Moscow's suggestion that the passenger plane, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur in July 2014, was brought down by Ukraine's military rather than the separatists. All 298 people on board, most of them Dutch, were killed.

President decries delay in passage of Freedom to Information Bill

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his frustration at the delay in the passage of the Freedom to Information Bill.
Although he spoke positively about freedoms Ghanaians were currently enjoying, he said the passage of the Freedom to Information Bill was crucial as it would give legal backing to the people's quest to seek information.

"I believe that it is something that we should complete and make available so that people can have a legal basis for demanding information if there is reluctance to give information," he said.

Ghana's economic growth slows in second quarter as oil output falls

ACCRA, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Ghana's economic growth slowed to 2.5 percent in the second quarter compared with a year earlier, provisional official data showed on Wednesday, due mainly to a temporary halt in oil production.

Ghana saw sustained GDP growth of above 8 percent until 2013, helped by exports of gold, cocoa and oil, but then slumped because of lower global commodity prices and a fiscal crisis that forced it to secure an aid deal with the International Monetary Fund that began last year.

Prez Mahama, Hollande hold talks in Paris

President John Dramani Mahama yesterday held bilateral talks with the French President, Francois Hollande, at the Elysee Palace in Paris as Ghana and France took their relations a notch higher.

Power sector needs robust value chain

The Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Mr Alex Mould, has said the gas-to-power sector needs a robust value chain to ensure that gas supplied for the production of power is paid for and on time.
“Each player in the value chain,” he said, “has to receive the revenue required to meet its cost and subsequently pay for what is supplied along the chain in the production of power.”

Vietnamese investors target rice investment

Vietnamese rice investors and exporters drawn from about 14 companies are in the country to explore investment opportunities in rice production, processing, storage, marketing and distribution.

The one-week visit from September 23-29 is organised by the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ghana-Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.The country consumes about 750,000 metric tonnes of rice annually.

However, just about 290,000metric tonnes are produced locally leaving a deficit of some 460,000 tonnes which is imported.

Nelson Mandela’s former wife has said that South Africa requires a “whole layer of fresh leadership” and called on senior figures in the African National Congress (ANC) to deal with allegations of corruption.
