Cape Coast, Aug. 15, GNA - The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is targeting a two-thirds majority in the next Parliament after the December 2016 general election.

Mr Alban Sumani Bagbin, the Member of Parliament for Nadowli West Constituency and Majority Leader in Parliament, who made this known at the National Campaign Launch of the NDC in Cape Coast, said the target was to prevent the pain and waste occasioned by decisions of Parliament.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has released the inflation rate for July 2016 with Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) declining to 16.7 per cent from 18.4 per cent in June 2016.

The monthly change rate was 0.9 per cent for July 2016 compared to 1.3 per cent recorded in June this year.

According to the figures released on Wednesday August 10, food inflation was 8.6 per cent in July, same as in May 2016.

Meanwhile, the inflation rate for imported items decreased to 15.2 per cent in July 2016, from 17.3 per cent recorded in June 2016.

Although 7 out of 10 Ghanaians say the country is heading in the wrong direction, President Mahama got a higher approval rating, a Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) survey has revealed.

In the study, 48% of respondents approve of the president’s management of the country while a percent less (47%) believes he has got it wrong as his first-term comes to an end in December.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has, on behalf of President John Mahama, presented to the Council of State petitions received in respect of the incarceration of three persons for contempt of court.

The petitions were received from lawyers of the jailed Montie Presenter, Salifu Maase, and his two guests, Ako Gunn and Alistair Nelson who have been jailed for four months by the Supreme Court, and a Civil Society Group, Research & Advocacy Platform.

Accra, Aug. 4, GNA – Ms Hannah Tetteh, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has held a bilateral meeting in Accra with her counterpart from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Mr Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir.

Ms Tetteh said the aim of the bilateral meeting was part of efforts to strengthen economic ties between the two nations.

Mr Bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir also reechoed that their meeting was to deepened economic cooperation and to strengthen other areas of cooperation.

The brief meeting was attended by government officials from both sides.

Accra, July 18, GNA - Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, has indicated that the proposed November 7, 2016 date for the general election cannot be changed.

She explained to the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Select Committee of Parliament that since the proposal for the change of date is about constitution amendment, its implementation could not be postponed to any other date.

Accra, July 18, GNA - The Supreme Court on Monday convicted two radio panelists and the host of a talk programme ‘Pampaso’ together with the directors of an Accra-based radio station, Montie FM.

The five-member panel presided over by Justices Sophia Akufo convicted the defendants of contempt for threatening or scandalising the court, defying and lowering the authority of the court, and bringing the authority of the court into disrepute.

However, the court has deferred sentencing to July 27.

The defendants pleaded liable for the charges and asked the court for mercy.
