Supreme Court to hear EC/PPP on Friday

Accra Nov. 2, GNA - The Supreme Court would on Friday hear an application by the Electoral Commission (EC) challenging the judgement of the High Court that overturned the commission’s disqualification of Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom as the candidate of the Progressive Peoples Party in the December polls.
This was after the EC’s requested for abridgement of time in the matter and same was granted by the Supreme Court. This means that the hearing which was slated for next week would now be heard on Friday.

Politicians should make Ghana better place –Peace Council

Tema, Nov 1, GNA - The National Peace Council has advised political party activists to resolve to make Ghana a better place than they met it.

Mr George Amoh, Director of Programmes at the Council, who gave the advice, said politicians must endeavour to maintain and improve upon the country their forefathers left for them and not to ruin it with electoral violence.

He added that Ghanaians must not allow the parties they belong to push them out normal and acceptable human behaviour since no political interest was greater than the peace and unity of Ghana.

Reps oppose Ghana’s discriminatory policy against Nigerian businessmen

• May seek redress at ECOWAS court over mandatory $1m deposit

The House of Representatives yesterday expressed displeasure at a policy compelling Nigerians willing to do business in Ghana to make a deposit of $1 million in a bank account.

A victim of the policy, Mr. Seidu Franklynn during an interactive session with members of the Rita Orji-led House Committee on Diaspora said the law was another case of xenophobia against Nigerians doing lawful businesses in Ghana.

Goldstar Air specifies requirements for its pilot applicants

Explosive found in vicinity of deputy minister's residence; security meeting underway

Security forces in the Ashanti Region say they have defused a 'powerful explosive' found in the vicinity of the deputy Ashanti Regional Minister Andy Osei Okrah's residence in Kumasi.

Luv FM's Erastus Asare Donkor reported the planted explosive was close to the National Security Data Centre which is located at Danyame, a suburb of Kumasi.

At least, 15 security operatives made up of military officers, armed police and national security officers have taken control of the area searching other likely explosives.

Journalists have to pay to cover 2016 elections – EC

Journalists interested in covering the 2016 general elections are expected to pay in order to be issued with accreditation for the national exercise.

The amount to be paid is yet to be determined by the Electoral Commission, a statement by the electoral body said. “Accreditation tags will be given to only those who have formally applied for it and for a fee to be determined by the Commission,” the statement signed by Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, Head of Communications at EC, said on Monday.

Cronos Airlines starts operations in Ghana

A new airline that will bridge the gap between equatorial Guinean’s capital Malabo and Accra, was greeted with cheers and applause at the airport, Friday.

The new airline, Cronos Airline will be flying from Accra to Malabo twice in a week and hopes to increase its frequency with increasing traffic.

Ghana’s aviation industry continues to receive many international airlines with increasing volume of traffic.

Most Rev. Palmer Buckle endorses Ghana + peace campaign

The Ghana + Peace Campaign 2016 which begun its tour to all the Regions in Ghana are currently in Accra. On 27th October 2016, the Ghana + Peace campaign delegates took the endorsement of the Most Rev. Charles Palmer-Buckler, who is the Ghanaian Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church, a former teacher and the second Ghanaian native to become Archbishop of Accra.
He was a member of 9-member National Reconcilliation Commission. He has remained vocal in Ghana and Africa on issues concerning peace, love and unity.

Nigerian Billionaire Mike Adenuga Receives Highest National Honor In Ghana

Nigerian billionaire Mike Adenuga has been conferred with the Ghanaian national award of ‘Companion Of The Star of Ghana’, the highest national honors in Ghana.

At a televised ceremony in Accra, Ghana on Saturday, Ghanaian President John Mahama bestowed the honor on the Nigerian tycoon in recognition of the immense contributions he has made to Ghana’s economic growth. Adenuga, who is referred to as ‘The Bull’ in Nigerian business circles, has assets worth more than $8 billion in Ghana alone, according to a citation read during the ceremony by President John Mahama.

EC to declare results of December elections 72 hours after close of polls

Results of presidential and parliamentary elections would be announced within three days of casting of the ballot, the EC has announced.

EC Chairperson, Charlotte Osei, is confident the use of manual and electronic transmission of results will enable the Commission collate and declare results within 72 hours.

The Commission has been evaluating documents of telecom companies bidding for Virtual Private Network.

The secured network will enable results to be transmitted from 275 Collation Centers to the head office of the Electoral Commission.

Ghana passes law 'to evict presidents'

Outgoing presidents in Ghana could be forcibly evicted from their official residences if they fail to move out in time, under new laws.

Presidents and vice-presidents will have to hand over official homes and vehicles at least two weeks before the inauguration of a new leader.

Ministers and other officials will have one month to do the same.

With general elections due on 7 December, the law aims to reduce delays in transferring government property.

Outages due to maintenance, not Dumsor – ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has allayed fears that country may be falling back into its power crisis days by explaining that the recent wide-spread outages were as a result of scheduled maintenance works on some Bulk Supply Points (BSPs).

At a press conference to explain the current happenings, the ECG’s Director of Operations, Engineer Tetteh Okine said the maintenance works on BSPs ended this past Sunday with work in Mallam and Baatsona.

Finance Minister, Seth Terkper and President John Mahama have finally been vindicated.

The latest World Bank report indicates that Ghana is the best place for doing business in West Africa. This sharply contradicts the position held by NPP Flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo and his Vice, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia who have deliberately painted a gloomy picture about Ghana’s economy.

Judiciary ready to protect electoral rights – Chief Justice

The Chief Justice Mrs Georgina T. Wood said the Judiciary has men and women committed to safeguarding and protecting electoral rights based on the fundamental rights of all individuals.

She has therefore called for stakeholder collaboration and cooperation to ensure that electoral disputes were dealt with smoothly, timely and successively.

Mrs Justice Wood was speaking at the opening of the ninth edition of the Annual Chief Justice’s Forum in Accra on the theme: “The Judiciary and Election 2016.”

Two Chinese Arrested For Degrading COCOBOD Land

Two Chinese nationals are in the grip of the National Security for allegedly destroying land belonging to the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).

Li Wen Qieng, 28, and Mo Sin Shan, 35, were arrested in Wassa Saman in the Wassa Mampong District in the Western Region on Saturday, October 22, 2016.

Briefing the media, the Deputy Intelligence Manager of COCOBOD, Mr Wisdom Delali Amehame, said a security guard of the Seed Production Department of the COCOBOD spotted the two who had erected canopies and were using two bulldozers to clear the land for mining.
