Fake News: CNN Shamed into Major Corrections on Ghana Election Story

Using the hashtag #GetitrightCNN, Twitter users in the African nation of Ghana are slamming CNN for a story that they say misrepresents actual conditions in their nation. Ghanaians and others interested in news from Ghana were also critical over CNN’s spelling and other factual errors.

The original December 9 story reporting on the election of opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo to the nation’s presidency claimed that Ghanaians were starving, misreported the dates that Nana Akufo-Addo ran for president in the past, and even spelled the word “Ghanaians” incorrectly. . .

In the run up to Ghana’s elections on December 7, the public was repeatedly reminded that its country had come to be seen as a beacon of democracy in a volatile region. In a series of competitive elections, power had changed hands back and forth between two major parties without the violence that has marred polls elsewhere in Africa.

Report: Ghana will be fastest growing African economy in 2017

A leading African economic think tank expects Ghana to have economic growth of 8.7 percent in 2017, the fastest of 54 countries ranked on the continent.

Cote d’Ivoire (8.3), Congo (8.0), Ethiopia (7.7) and Mozambique (7.5) rounded out the top five, according to the African Economic Outlook (AEO), a partnership between the African Development Bank, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations.

Ghana Export Import Bank launched in Accra

The Ghana Export Import Bank (Ghana EXIM) was yesterday launched in Accra to provide long term and patient capital, export insurance and financial advisory services for businesses operating in the export end of the market.

Ghana: Ban urges President, opposition leader to defuse tensions ahead of upcoming elections

29 November 2016 – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today urged Ghana’s President and the opposition leader to continue their role in defusing tensions towards the holding of peaceful and credible elections in the African country.

According to a readout issued by Mr. Ban's spokesperson, the Secretary-General had separate phone calls with John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, and Nana Akufo-Addo, head of Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), to discuss the general elections scheduled to take place on 7 December.

NDC springs surprise birthday celebration for Mahama

President John Mahama was treated to a surprise birthday celebration early Tuesday morning before starting a heavily packed campaign schedule in the Central region.

The President turned 58 years old Tuesday. A cake designed with the party's colours - red,black and green - was presented to him, surrounded by the Central Regional chairman of the party Allotey Jacobs and party officials.

Thabo Mbeki arrives in Ghana today; leads Commonwealth Observer Mission for Dec 7 polls

Former South African President, Thabo Mbeki, is expected in Accra on Tuesday to lead the Commonwealth Observer Mission for the general elections on December 7.

The South African diplomat will stay in Ghana for the next two weeks, returning to his home country on December 13.

Mr Mbeki says he accepted the Commonwealth assignment because “all of us have a responsibility to do everything possible to ensure that Africa continues to consolidate and deepen democracy as one of the central pillars in her Renaissance.”

Inflation slowed to 15.8% in October from 17.2% in September

Ghanaians scheduled to vote in general elections on Dec. 7

Ghana’s central bank cut its benchmark interest rate for the first time in more than five years after inflation slowed to the lowest rate since 2014.

The Bank of Ghana cut the rate by 50 basis points to 25.5 percent, Governor Abdul Nashiru Issahaku told reporters Monday in the capital, Accra.

Five of the six economists in a Bloomberg survey forecast the rate would be reduced and one said it would be kept unchanged at 26 percent.

President John Dramani Mahama has urged the electorate not to fall for the "one this, one that" promises of the New Patriotic Party (NPP ) because those promises are only meant to win votes.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the Wa Naa, Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo, at his palace on Friday, the President said: “The one this, one that promises are empty promises."

Earlier on Thursday night, President Mahama made a similar statement at a rally at Dafiama as he campaigned in the Upper West Region.

Donald Trump state visit to UK being considered

The UK government is considering inviting US President-elect Donald Trump for a state visit, Downing Street has said.

The Republican, who beat Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the election earlier this month, is due to take office on 20 January.

Ghana Survey Shows Confidence in Electoral Commission

A new survey conducted by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD) shows that a majority of Ghanaians believe the Electoral Commission of Ghana can administer free, peaceful and credible elections December 7.

Ghanaians will go to the polls that day to vote in presidential, parliamentary and local elections.

In an interview with VOA, Kojo Asante, senior research fellow at the CDD and part of the group that administered the survey, said more Ghanaians now have a positive perception of the electoral body and those who organize the elections than in the past.

Court expunges Amidu’s ‘false claim’ against Mahama from application

The Supreme Court has dismissed Martin Amidu’s claim that President John Dramani Mahama personally ordered the discontinuation of the application by the Attorney-General to examine businessman Alfred Woyome, over the repayment of the ¢51 million judgment debt paid to him.

The former Attorney General in his application praying the court to allow him to orally examine Woyome last week, alleged that the Attorney General’s decision to discontinue the oral examination of Mr Woyome in court, was upon an order by President Mahama.
