French Open 2019: Djokovic beaten by Thiem in semi-final

World number one Novak Djokovic's bid to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time was ended by Dominic Thiem in the French Open semi-final.

Thiem beat the 32-year-old 6-2 3-6 7-5 5-7 7-5 in the semi-final, which began on Friday but was interrupted by bad weather three times.

The fourth seed will face 11-time champion Rafael Nadal on Sunday, a repeat of last year's final.

Thiem, 25, is the first Austrian player to reach a second Grand Slam final......

Caf President Ahmad Ahmad allegedly arrested in France

The Caf leader was reportedly taken in on Thursday morning at a hotel in France where he was staying for the Fifa congress
Caf President Ahmad Ahmad has allegedly been arrested by French police at the Berri Hotel in Paris.

The Caf boss was in the European nation to attend the Fifa congress, which brought about Gianni Infantino’s re-election as President of the governing body.

According to Jeune Afrique, Ahmad Ahmad was detained at 8:30am local time and will face the anti-corruption agency's Central Office for Combating Corruption and Financial and Tax Crimes (Oclif).

Ayew is Black Stars captain

Black Stars coach, Kwasi Appiah, has named André Ayew as the permanent captain of Ghana’s senior national football team ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

This followed a meeting with the top brass of the Normalisation Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after which approval and full backing were given to Appiah’s plans.

Ayew replaces Asamoah Gyan as captain of the Black Stars.

Gyan, who has captained the Black Stars for a record seven years, has been elevated to the position of General Captain.

2019 AFCON qualifier: Ayew scores a brace as Ghana beat Ethiopia

Jordan Ayew scored a brace on Sunday, 18 November 2018 to give the Black Stars of Ghana a 2-0 win over Ethiopia in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Ayew hit the back of the net just three minutes on the clock courtesy an assist from defender Harrison Afful.

Ayew got his brace from a well taken penalty kick after Emmanuel Boateng was fouled in the box by Ethiopian goalkeeper.

The Ethiopians came into the second half stronger, winning the lion share of possession but the Ghanaian defenders kept them at bay.

The uncle of Captain Maxwell Mahama, young military officer lynched by Denkyira-Obuasi residents on Monday said, the family wants justice to bring a closure to his gruesome killing.

Prof. Fred Mark Bagonluri says it is unfortunate a man who has sworn to defend his country had to die in such a manner.

“A man who decides to save his nation has to die in war, and not murdered by the very citizens that he swore an oath to protect and defend against both internal and external aggression.

Christian Atsu has been left out of the 30-man Ghana squad for next month's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia.

The 25-year-old forward is one of several high-profile players omitted by Kwesi Appiah in his first squad since his second coming as Black Stars coach.

Guinea join Ghana in U-17 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals

Guinea joined Ghana in the semi-finals of the Under 17 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon after a 0-0 draw between both sides in their final match of Group A in Libreville.

The point was enough for Guinea to finish as group runners-up and secure a place at the World Cup in India in October.

In the other Group A game, Cameroon beat hosts Gabon 1-0 in Port Gentil courtesy of a goal from Stephane Thierry Zobo.

The result was not enough for Cameroon to progress, ending the tournament in third place in the standings, ahead of Gabon who had already been eliminated.

Starlets face familiar foe in semi-finals

Ghana Black Starlets will face Niger in the semi-finals of the u-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Port Gentil.

The game will be the third meeting both sides in the space of a month after Ghana beat their counterparts twice in a double header with a 2-0 margin.

The Stalets have caught the eye of many progressing to the semis in fine fashion scoring nine and conceeding none. Their counterparts finished second in their group scoring four and conceeding four.

Anthony Joshua could face Wladimir Klitschko in Cardiff in October

A rematch between unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko could take place at Cardiff's Principality Stadium in October.

Briton Joshua stopped Klitschko at Wembley last month to add the WBA world heavyweight title to his IBF crown.

Wales' rugby union team will play at the Principality Stadium for most Saturdays in November and December, but 28 October could be a potential date.

"Talks are ongoing over venues," said Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn.

Ghana to face USA in July 1 friendly

The Black Stars will play against the United States in an international friendly on July 1 at the Pratt & Whitney Stadium in East Hartford, Connecticut.

The match forms part of the United States’ preparations for their hosting of the Gold Cup tournament which starts on July 7.

The match was announced by the United States Soccer Federation in April but the choice of venue was confirmed on May 1.

In-coming Black Stars coach, James Kwasi Appiah has held a closed-door meeting with Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo, www.footballghana.com has reported.

The meeting which was held on Tuesday at the Flagstaff House precedes Appiah's official announcement as coach of the senior national team.

Ghana re-appoint Kwesi Appiah as coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has re-appointed Kwesi Appiah as the coach of the Black Stars.

Appiah, who will also take charge of the national team for locally-based players, has been offered a two-year contract to start work 1 May.

He replaces Avram Grant who stepped down as coach after the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

It is a second stint in charge for Appiah, who led the Black Stars from 2012 until 2014.

Since leaving the Black Stars following a poor World Cup campaign, he has been coaching Sudanese side Al Khartoum.

Issa Hayatou loses CAF presidency after 29 years of incumbency

70-year-old Issa Hayatou has lost the Confederation of African Football (CAF) presidency to Madagascar Football Association head Ahmad Ahmad on Thursday at the 39th CAF Ordinary General Assembly in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.

Ahmad won 34 of the 54 votes in the election to end Hayatou’s 29-year rule which started since 1988.

Ahmad will become the CAF’s seventh president since the continental body’s 60 years of existence.

The result means Hayatou will have to renege his FIFA position.
