Probe Uni-Pass deal – IMANI petitions parliament

Policy think-tank IMANI has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament to institute a probe into the 10-year Uni-Pass contract signed between the Ministry of Trade and Ghana Link Network Services Limited—in collaboration with their foreign partners Customs Uni-Pass International Agency (CUPIA) of Korea Customs Services—to introduce Uni-Pass to the ports system.

The request for a Parliamentary enquiry into the Uni-Pass deal, according to IMANI, is to “prevent disruption to Ghana’s progress on trade facilitation”.

100-yr $50bn bond'll end "hand-to-mouth" status – Ofori-Atta

The decision by the government to raise a $50 billion ultra-long-term bond over a period of 100 years “is not intended to derail our debts sustainability path, but rather to enhance it”, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has explained.

Presenting the 2019 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the government on the theme: “Putting Ghana Back to Work”, Mr Ofori-Atta said on Thursday, 15 November 2018 that the government announced its intention to issue longer-dated sovereign bonds this year as part of “our bilateral engagement with other countries”.

Expect heavy rains today – Meteo

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA) has cautioned Ghanaians to be on the lookout as the country will experience heavy rains on Monday [27 May 2019] morning and afternoon.

4 NDC aspirants submit forms today

Four flag bearer aspirants of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are expected to present their nomination forms to the party today, Monday, 17 December 2018.

The four include former President John Dramani Mahama, Professor Joshua Alabi, Sylvester Mensah and Alban Bagbin.

Mr Mahama, after the party event, will proceed to the Accra International Trade Fair Centre to address the media.

This will be his first address to journalists after losing the 2016 general elections.

Don’t panic; keep doing business with rural banks – BoG

The Bank of Ghana has denied social media rumours that its intended clean-up of the rural and community banks sector will cause depositors to lose their funds.

In a statement, the central bank said its attention “has been drawn to malicious messages circulating on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook that an intended ‘clean up’ of the Rural and Community Banks (RCBs) sub-sector would negatively affect depositors fund with RCBs, urging them to move their funds to other institutions”.

EU confident Ghana election will go well

The European Union (EU) ambassador in Ghana, William Hanna, has said the EU will be looking up to Ghana to build on its democratic track record in the December polls.

In an interview with Class News’ Ridwan Karim Dini Osman, he charged stakeholders to encourage healthy debate in the build-up to the elections.

“Last year, we saw a lot of elections that went well in West Africa. We expect the elections to also go well in Ghana. Ghana has an already good record…” he stated.

IMF chief visits Ghana Dec. 16

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde is set to visit Ghana from 16 – 18 December 2018, Deputy Minister of Information, Pius Enam Hadzide, has said.

“The visit comes weeks ahead of Ghana’s conclusion of the IMF programme”, Mr Hadzide told journalists on Wednesday, 12 December 2018 at the ministry’s mid-week news briefing.

AWCON 2018: Black Queens pip Algeria in opener

The Black Queens of Ghana defeated Algeria by a solitary goal in the opening game of the Africa Women's Cup of Nations.

Gladys Amfobea's 13th minute strike was enough for the Black Queens to open the campaign with victory.

Ghana began the game in an explosive manner, creating several chances in the early stages of the game but the Algerian goalkeeper was up for the task.

However, Gladys Amfobea took advantage of a miscued pass to volley the ball home for the Black Queens.

Mubarak wasn’t denied Palestine entry – Israeli Amb.

The Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Ami Mehl, has denied claims that the Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, was denied a visa to enter Palestine.

The lawmaker, who was invited by the Palestinian Authority to give a speech in Ramallah, alleged that his entry permit to Palestine was cancelled at the last minute just when he was about crossing the border into Palestine.

NDC polls: Sammy Gyamfi floors Fred Agbenyo by whopping 4,000 votes

Mr Sammy Gyamfi has defeated Mr Fred Agbenyo in the National Democratic Congress’ internal polls to become the new Director of Communication of the main opposition party.

Mr Gyamfi, a lawyer and former TEIN president of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), beat the incumbent Deputy Communication Director by 4,000 votes at the party’s National Delegates Congress at the International Trade Fair Centre, Accra.

According to provisional results, Mr Gyamfi polled 6,255 votes whereas his only contender in the two-man race, Mr Agbenyo polled 2,255 votes.
