“Delta Force” suspects to face additional charges

Kumasi, April 08, GNA - Mr David Asante-Apeatu, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has hinted that the 13 suspects of the group calling itself “Delta Force,” a vigilante body that were assisted to escaped from lawful custody from the KMA court where they were facing trial for allegedly assaulting a public officer, would be slapped with more charges.

Government will take measures to protect local businesses from foreign competitors, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta has said.

In response to concerns raised by the President of the Association of Ghana Industries , James Asare Adjei on competition from foreign investors at the maiden National Policy Summit, the Minister said there should be no apologies over government’s desire to see local companies flourish at the expense of foreign ones.

‘We remain Ghana’s largest development partner’ – EU Ambassador

The European Union has said it remains committed to the economic development of Ghana.

EU Ambassador to Ghana, William Hanna said the Union will continue its development cooperation with the new government focusing on sustainable development.

At the Europe Day reception in Accra last Tuesday, Mr Hanna said the EU’s bilateral and development programmes will be coordinated to promote prosperity among Ghanaians.

“This year, more and more, we are hearing the phrase ‘Ghana beyond Aid’ [and] I am encouraged by this concept,” he said.

‘Galamsey’-induced water crisis spreads through Cape Coast

Residents in Cape Coast and surrounding towns in the Central region are in a water supply crisis as they continue to bear the brunt of illegal mining in River Pra.

JoyNews Central regional correspondent reports, residents hunt for water as the taps have run dry – because the Sekyere-Hermang water treatment plant is choked with turgid water.

The plant in the Western region, built in 2008 for €40m, sips a portion of the 240km Pra River and treats it for onward pumping into Brimsu waterworks in Cape coast.

‘Economy is not broke’ – Terkper insists

Despite an unwavering rise in public debt and government’s difficulty to meet key statutory financial obligations, the Finance Minister has dispelled a widely held view that the economy is broke.

Seth Terkper insists government’s tax revenue mobilization is progressing, suggesting that government's borrowing spree is temporary.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has described as “expected” the controversy generated by his 60th-anniversary speech delivered Monday.

Zimbabwe election: President Mnangagwa calls for unity

Emmerson Mnangagwa says he will be a leader for all Zimbabweans in a call for unity after rows broke out over his election victory.

The president appealed for peace and promised an independent investigation into the military after six people were killed in post-election violence.

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has described the president’s victory as a “coup against [the people’s] will”.

This was the first election since long-term leader Robert Mugabe was ousted.

Zero tolerance for teacher absenteeism yields positive result

Accra, Oct. 21, GNA – The Zero Tolerance for Teacher Absenteeism policy adopted by the Ministry of Education to enhance accountability, and increase teacher presence as well as time on desk in schools has yielded positive results.

After three years of its implementation, the rate of teacher absenteeism has declined from 27 per cent in 2012 to seven per cent in 2016.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Minister of Education, who announced this in Accra said, the Ministry would continue to champion the course until the rate of teacher absenteeism is brought to zero.

World boxing champion Anthony Joshua says he enjoys watching opponents "turn from a man to a boy" in the ring as he starts to set his targets on rising New Zealand heavyweight Joseph Parker.

World faces greatest humanitarian crisis since 1945, UN warns

The world faces the largest humanitarian crisis since the UN was founded in 1945, with more than 20 million people in four countries facing starvation and famine, the UN humanitarian chief has said.

Stephen O'Brien told the UN Security Council that "without collective and coordinated global efforts, people will simply starve to death" and "many more will suffer and die from disease."

He urged an immediate injection of funds for Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia and northeast Nigeria plus safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid "to avert a catastrophe."

World Bank to help Ghana solve economic challenges

Accra, April 4, GNA - The World Bank’s Vice President for Africa, Mr Makhtar Diop, has extended the Bank’s support towards addressing Ghana’s numerous economic challenges.

He said the Bank was concerned about “one of the engines in the sub-region” and was determined to help Ghana emerge out of her current situation.

World Bank provides funds for Tatale-Yendi road - President Mahama

Accra, Aug. 25, GNA - Government has secured funding from the World Bank to construct a bituminous double surface dressing road from Tatale to Zabzugu to Yendi in the Northern Region, President Mahama has said.

He said proposals had been approved and now going through the tendering process for work to begin on the 80-kilometre road up to Natchamba which shared boundary with the Republic of Togo.

President Mahama said this when he addressed party supporters at Tatale in the Tatale-Sangule District as part of his four-day campaign tour of the Northern Region.

World Bank Group to provide $517m for Ghana oil and gas project

ACCRA, Dec 15 (Reuters) - The World Bank Group said on Thursday it would provide $517 million to Ghana in debt and guarantees to support the $7.7 billion Sankofa oil and gas project being developed by Italy's ENI and upstream trader Vitol Ghana.

The finance adds to a $700 million guarantee package and brings its total financing to around $1.217 billion for the offshore project, whose gas component is set to open in 2018, a statement said.

World Bank confirms discussions to extend Ghana’s IMF programme

World Bank Country Director Henry Kerali has confirmed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is in discussions with Ghana over extension of the Fund program.

This confirms earlier reports by JOYBUSINESS that government is likely to extend the fund program which should have ended in April 2018.

The move JOYBUSINESS understands has been influenced by IMF’s concerns that Ghana may not be able to implement the critical reforms before the original completion date of April 2018.
