EC to declare results of December elections 72 hours after close of polls

Results of presidential and parliamentary elections would be announced within three days of casting of the ballot, the EC has announced.

EC Chairperson, Charlotte Osei, is confident the use of manual and electronic transmission of results will enable the Commission collate and declare results within 72 hours.

The Commission has been evaluating documents of telecom companies bidding for Virtual Private Network.

The secured network will enable results to be transmitted from 275 Collation Centers to the head office of the Electoral Commission.

Accra floods: World Bank intervenes with $200m

Over 2.5 million people in the Odaw River Basin of the Greater Accra Region (GAR) will benefit from improved flood risk management, solid waste management and improved access to basic infrastructure and services in targeted communities of the GAR, under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project.

The $200 million funded project was approved by the World Bank Board of Executives Directors today.

The Electoral Commission says it is ready to ensure that this year's election is credible.

Speaking at the launch of 2016 Peaceful Election stamps by Ghana Post, Deputy Electoral Commissioner, Amadu Sulley said credible elections were crucial in ensuring peace before and after the elections.

Mr Sulley said the Commission has so far adhered to guiding principles of Electoral practices to ensure that the polls are credible.

Capt. Mahama’s death challenges my citizenship - Uncle

The uncle of Captain Maxwell Mahama, young military officer lynched by Denkyira-Obuasi residents on Monday said, the family wants justice to bring a closure to his gruesome killing.

Prof. Fred Mark Bagonluri says it is unfortunate a man who has sworn to defend his country had to die in such a manner.

“A man who decides to save his nation has to die in war, and not murdered by the very citizens that he swore an oath to protect and defend against both internal and external aggression.

“For him to die in this manner challenges my citizenship,” he said.

Minimum capital requirement for banks to hit GH¢500 million from 2017

The minimum capital requirement for commercial banks in the country could be increased to Gh¢500 million from next year.

Former Health Minister in the erstwhile National Democratic Congress government, Alex Segbefia says the decision by the party leadership to expand its electoral college, is partly to blame for the embarrassing defeat the party suffered in the 2016 elections.

Montie 3: Mahama exercised executive power, period! – Ato Dadzie

Soldiers protecting Galamsey operators – Amewu

The Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Peter Amewu has accused some personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces High command of providing cover for galamsey operators in hard-hit areas.

He alleged the said military command has without authorization, deployed personnel to protect galamsey operators in parts of the Ashanti region where his team is touring.

In an interview with Citi News, John Peter Amewu called for an immediate probe into the matter.

Cronos Airlines starts operations in Ghana

A new airline that will bridge the gap between equatorial Guinean’s capital Malabo and Accra, was greeted with cheers and applause at the airport, Friday.

The new airline, Cronos Airline will be flying from Accra to Malabo twice in a week and hopes to increase its frequency with increasing traffic.

Ghana to export power by 2020 – Energy Minister

Ghana may export power to neighbouring countries by 2020 if current reforms in the energy sector are completed, Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko has said.

The Minister said the country could be generating in excess energy capacity of 1,700 megawatts because of the many power plants being installed.

Speaking on the final day of the National Policy Summit 2017 at the Accra International Conference Centre Tuesday, the Minister said the excess power will be exported for the money to be invested in other sectors of the economy.

Waiting until 2019 to construct footbridges too far – Adentan resident

A resident of Madina-Adentan is unhappy with a 2019 timeline given by the Ghana Highways Authority for the construction of bridges on the Madina-Adentan highway.

Selorm Brantie who is a member of the residents association is unimpressed with the assurance by GHA.

He said one year is too long a time and that more people would have died by that time.

Akufo-Addo postpones naming ministerial appointees; begs for time

President-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo, has postponed the presentation of a list of proposed ministers who will serve in his government to his party’s highest decision-making body.

Nana Akufo-Addo was expected to submit the list to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Executive Committee (NEC) for review, however, at a meeting Thursday, December 15, 2016, he could not provide the list.

Another meeting between Nana Akufo-Addo and the NEC has been scheduled, Joy News sources say.
