Ghana to begin clean fuel importation from July 1

Effective July 1, 2017, petrol and diesel imported into the country will have a maximum sulpur content level of 50 Parts Per Million (ppm), Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Hassan Tampuli, has directed.

According to him, NPA had to revise the initial start date of April 1, 2017, mainly to engage Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to make sure that the State-owned refinery as a national asset is not put at a disadvantage position.

He announced this at the 4th Annual General Meeting of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD).

EU affirms its continuous support to Ghana

The Charge’ d’ Affaires of the European Union in Ghana, Mr Paolo Salvia, has reiterated the commitment of the European Union (EU) to continue its support to Ghana in the area of private sector competitiveness, trade facilitation and fiscal transition.

This, he said, would be done through the regional envelope of the 11th European Development Fund.

Mr Salvia made this remark at the final Steering Committee Meeting of the Trade Related Assistance and Quality Enabling Programme (TRAQUE) in Accra.

Focus on rebuilding NDC - Group

Action Movement, a group affiliated to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stressed the need to rebuild the party to achieve its objectives for the country.

In so doing, the group is calling for the healing of wounds among the rank and file following the NDC’s 2016 electoral defeat.

It has also called on those campaigning for the 2020 presidential slot of the NDC to cease forthwith and rather concentrate on rebuilding the party to capture political power in the next general election.

Ghana records over $500m trade surplus in February 2017

New figures from the Bank of Ghana have revealed that Ghana’s total balance of trade for February 2017 recorded a surplus of 573 million dollars.

This is equivalent to 1.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product for the period.

The surplus is an improvement compared to the over 500 million dollars deficit recorded in February 2016.

But the country’s revenue from cocoa for the period dropped by ten percent.

The National Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Professor Edmund Delle has vowed that the party will resist any attempt to rewrite the country’s history in a way that discredits Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s significant role in Ghana’s independence struggle.

He said people agitating over the consistent reference to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as the founder of independent Ghana are only being selective with history.

Ghana’s unemployment rate hit 11.9 % in 2015 – Report

Ghana’s unemployment rate stood at 11.9 percent in 2015.

This is according to the latest Ghana Labour Force Survey Report by the Ghana Statistical Service.

This is about twice the figure recorded in 2012/2013 (5.8%) based on the Statistical services strict definition of unemployment – where “one was not working, actively looking for a job and available for work.”

However, the definition has changed for the 2015 studies, was based on a relaxed definition where “one was available for work and not working within the last seven days before an interview.”

US government committed to transforming Ghana’s power sector - Ambassador

Takoradi March 23, GNA - Mr Robert Porter Jackson, United States of America Ambassador to Ghana has stated that the US government was committed to the transformation of the power sector in Ghana.

He said through companies like GE oil and gas, the US government had made huge investments in they had provided 350million dollars towards the self- help electrification project in 200 communities across Ghana.

Mr Jackson said this during the inauguration of a multi-million dollar General Electric (GE) oil and gas service facility at the Takoradi Port in the western region.

France relocates Embassy in Ghana

The French Embassy in Ghana is set to be relocated from its current location, where it shares the premises with the Flagstaff House, the seat of government.

The moved French embassy will be situated next to the current residence of the French ambassador to Ghana in Cantonments.

Excited by the news, President Akufo-Addo expressed the government’s deep satisfaction at France’s decision to resettle their embassy.

He assured that the relocation exercise will be achieved without political difficulties.

GHANA: PRESIDENT SENDS CONDOLENCES AFTER TREE ‘KILLS 18’ AT WATERFALL

Ghana’s president has offered his condolences to the families of victims of a freak accident at a popular waterfall, in which a tree fell and killed at least 18 people.

It happened during a storm on Sunday at the waterfall in Kintampo, a popular bathing spot in Ghana’s central Brong-Ahafo region. The tree crushed students who were swimming in a pool at the base of the waterfall, local police chief Owusu Boampong told the BBC.

A further 22 people were injured in the incident and taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Ghana among countries with most ‘bounced’ US visa applications

Ghana is among the countries with the highest United States visa application denial rates, according to the U.S. State Department.

Ghana was among the 13 countries with a denial rate of over 60 percent according to figures from the 2015 fiscal year.

The highest rates were found to be in African and Middle Eastern countries, including Syria and Somalia, whilst Cuba and Laos also had high denial rates.

Information Minister justifies deputy ministerial appointments

Accra, March 16, GNA - Mr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, the Minister of Information, has justified the seemingly high number of deputy ministers appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, saying the move would ensure efficiency in governance.

Ghana Opposition Slams President Over 'Elephant Size' Government

ACCRA (Reuters) - Ghana's main opposition party and radio phone-in callers slammed new President Nana Akufo-Addo on Thursday for naming an 'elephant size' team of 110 ministers and deputies despite a campaign promise to cut government waste.

Akufo-Addo named 50 deputy ministers and four ministers of state on Wednesday in addition to 56 ministers and deputies previously announced. It is the largest government since the West African country adopted a democratic constitution in 1992.

President Akufo-Addo nominates Adwoa Safo, Prof Yankah as Ministers of State

Accra, March 15, GNA - President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has released a list of 54 nominated persons, including Ms Sarah Adwoa Safo, Deputy Majority Leader to serve as Ministers of State.

He also nominated Professor Kwesi Yankah, President of the Central University College, to serve as Minister of State and the rest as Deputy Ministers in Government.

Accordingly, the president has forwarded 54 names to Parliament for vetting and approval for the various ministries.

2017 Budget failed to set social protection targets - SEND Ghana

Civil Society Organisation, SEND Ghana has faulted the government over its inability to clearly state its targets for social protections issues, especially child protection and welfare in the 2017 budget.

The group explained that although expenditure allocation to the sector Ministry - the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection- increased by about 416 per cent over the 2016 figure, the absence of a programme budget for the ministry would make it difficult to assess the proportion that goes into child rights promotion and protection.
