Serena Williams may have lost the No. 1 ranking, it’s way too early to write her off yet, two of her main rivals said.

It has been a lean year by Williams’ lofty standards, with two grand slam finals defeats and one win at Wimbledon.

The American, who turned 35 this week, has been upstaged on the court by German’s Angelique Kerber, who stunned her at the Australian Open and sealed the No. 1 spot by clinching her first US Open title earlier this month. Williams had been No. 1 for a record-tying 186 weeks. . . .
